About Us
History and Objectives
The Canterbury Ice Hockey Association (CIHA) is the parent body of formalised ice hockey in the region of Canterbury, New Zealand. We are an affiliate of the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF), the national body overseeing ice hockey in New Zealand.
Organised ice hockey in the Canterbury region dates back to at least the 1930's. CIHA can trace its roots to the mid-1950s when it was part of the New Zealand Ice Skating Association (NZISA), and CIHA was officially established as an incorporated society in 1962. A detailed history of ice hockey and other ice sports in the south island of New Zealand can be found here.
Today, CIHA has several hundred members and is organised as a charitable incorporated society governed by an executive committee appointed yearly. CIHA's primary objectives are to organise, promote, publicise, and grow the sport of ice hockey in Canterbury, making it accessible to all ages and skill levels. Our games are hosted at the Alpine Ice Sports Centre at 495 Brougham Street, in Opawa, Christchurch.
For more information, including getting involved as a player or volunteer, please send us a general enquiry or contact a specific committee member.
Thank You, Life Members
CIHA is a charitable organisation that runs almost entirely through generous contributions of time and effort by individuals who have a passion for ice hockey and see the benefit our sport can have on individuals, families, and our community. We occasionally recognise outstanding contributions made by individuals at our annual general meeting through election of Life Members. Thank you, CIHA Life Members!
